‘John Wick 4’ Director Reveals Details For Upcoming Keanu Reeves Film
John Wick 4 director Chad Stahelski has revealed key details regarding the upcoming Keanu Reeves film.
One franchise that no one expected to be a commercial and critical beast was John Wick, which essentially brought ’90s heartthrob and action star Keanu Reeves back into the limelight. The films have been praised for Reevs’ acting, Stahelski’s direction and action choreography (Stahelski actually began his relationship with Reeves as his stunt double on The Matrix), and the intricate but cool world building. After John Wick 3 was a smash-hit at the cinemas last year, it was obvious that a fourth film would see Stahelski and Reeves returning to the franchise.
In a brand new interview with Collider, the John Wick director revealed some key details regarding the upcoming Keanu Reeves film, including how the film will take influence from a scrapped idea from the movie.
“Then we just kinda met each other when we were doing the publicity tour and I think we were in Japan, and Keanu goes, ‘I think I got one more left in me,’ and we had one idea we didn’t use which we really loved and we have to cut it out of number three [Parabellum], just didn’t have the space for it. So we’re like, ‘Okay, we’ll do a fourth. That’s gonna be awesome. We’ll make a plan.’ The studios […] went, ‘We totally get what you’re trying to do.’ We submitted an idea or thematic [plan] and it was really big. So, we’re talking about doing a little bit more than a [John Wick 4], or something like that, and trying to develop that. We’ll see how that goes.”
It’s also clear that John Wick 4 is far from release, as the project is still in its early days of development. Stahelski continued by discussing where he’s at with the film’s production, as well as giving insight into his creative process.
“We have, I wouldn’t call it a first draft but I’d call it a ‘scriptment’: A written-out story, part outline, part script, part thing. We know where we want to go, we know the thematics. We call it “the toy box.” It’s like a 100-and-something page document, but some of it’s written. It’s a good place to start. Then we start thinning it out, and then we work with the writers to get the right scenes, and then we start working with Keanu’s dialogue. It’s a very outward-in process for us. Then, we’ll do the inward-outward process which is about character. So, to answer your question, I’m in a happy place where we are in development. We got, not quite a locked-in first draft, but we’re in a place where we know what we want do and where we want to do it.”
The director also confirmed that there isn’t really a timeline on the film at the moment considering the coronavirus has forced numerous productions to shutter. Keanu Reeves and Stahelski are currently working on The Matrix 4, which was in the early phases of filming when its production was forced to shutdown. Stahelski confirmed that John Wick 4 would only begin production once The Matrix 4 wrapped.
“Matrix was only four weeks in when this all happened. So, Keanu’s gotta go finish his commitment up on The Matrix, which is a big deal and which I think will probably take him until the end of the year. Then we have to go into our prep mode and then we’ll start.”
These details, though small, really do help us understand how the director is managing everything. At the moment, we’re still pretty far out from John Wick 4, but at least we’ll get The Matrix 4 first to get our Keanu Reeves fix.

Lionsgate is moving forward with a fourth entry in the John Wick film series, but fans re-watch the third installment on all home media formats. Here is the official synopsis for Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum:
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “Excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.
Directed by Chad Stahelski from a script written by Derek Kolstad, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum stars Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Ian McShane, Ruby Rose, Common, Lance Reddick, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jason Mantzoukas, Anjelica Huston, and Boban Marjanovic.
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
