The Star Wars franchise is not a stranger to divided audiences and last year’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker just may have been the most divisive of all. While the film did earn over $1B at the worldwide box office, it was none the less the least grossing film of the sequel trilogy. It also had the most negative critical reception of the live-action films, earning a 52% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, beating out Star Wars: Episode I – The Phanton Menace by 1%.

Common criticisms across the board were the film’s rushed pacing and a general sense that a lot had been cut out.  This has lead to various conspiracy theories regarding Disney’s treatment of the franchise and of director J.J. Abrams in particular. In addition, it has caused some to theorize that J.J. Abrams has his own cut that Disney buried somewhere. While this is likely not the case, scenes in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker were undoubtedly cut out to make way for a shorter runtime and we may just see them in the film’s upcoming comic book adaptation.

While speaking to Star Wars.com, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comic writer Judy Houser did not definitively say that these cut scenes would make their way into the comic. However, she did hint at it, calling the comic a chance to build story elements out of things that did not have time or a place on the big screen:

“I think one of the great things about adaptations in other mediums is you do get the chance to build out elements of the story there may not have been time or a place for on the screen. Giving light to new scenes gives the creators in these other mediums a chance to add to the story, rather than just translating it for the page.”

What do you all make of Judy Houser’s comments? Could the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comic include scenes that may have been cut from the film? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
