Former Directors Talk Lessons Learned From Ezra Miller’s ‘The Flash’
The production of Ezra Miller’s The Flash is perhaps one of the most troubled on the DC Extended Universe’s slate behind perhaps only that of Justice League. Since the film was announced it has gone through several writers an directors who left the production at various stages. At one point Spider-Man: Homecoming writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were set to direct the film. Unfortunately, creative differences prompted their exit but they stuck around long enough to learn a few lessons from the production.
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter the former directors of The Flash talked a bit about what they learned during their time with the Ezra Miller film. According to the two, one of the big lessons they took away from it was to still approach certain aspects of it as if it was a lower budgeted film:
“The challenge is to approach it as you would a much smaller movie, and not get caught up in the fact that you have $100 million-plus to spend and start thinking about the biggest set pieces you can construct. Rather, focus on the stuff that makes it special and makes an audience invest — and that’s the characters. That’s in the stuff you don’t need a lot of money to do right. That’s how we approached The Flash and that’s how we’re approaching D&D.”

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash will be inspired by the Flashpoint comic storyline which followed The Flash as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles. It is currently unknown how much inspiration the upcoming Ezra Miller film will take from the comic.
